Dr. Amanpreet Kaur

Joint CIP-Hutton Potato Scientist

Dr. Amanpreet Kaur is a potato geneticist with a joint appointment at the James Hutton Institute in Dundee and the International Potato Center (CIP) in Peru. She earned her Ph.D. as a Commonwealth Split-Site Scholar and began her research career as a molecular biologist and plant biotechnologist. She later transitioned into the field of plant genetics and breeding as a Marie Curie Fellow, where she worked to introduce an informed phase of potato breeding. Her research focused on resistance gene deployment in widely grown potato varieties and studying their impact on shaping effector diversity in the late blight pathogen.

In her current role, she aims to accelerate potato improvement by integrating AI-enabled approaches with genomics, genetics and biotechnology. A key focus of her research is strengthening diploid breeding and exploring potato genetic diversity to identify and deploy pre-breeding material for the development of nutritionally improved, disease-resistant and climate-resilient potato varieties.

Alongside her research, Amanpreet leads and contributes to international collaborative programmes connecting CIP, breeding programmes, research institutes and universities across Europe, Africa, Latin America and Asia. She is actively involved in developing international partnerships and mobilising research funding to advance potato improvement. Through her involvement in the EuroBlight network, she is also interested in strengthening connections with AsiaBlight and AfricaBlight to promote global pathogen surveillance, knowledge exchange and more informed deployment of disease resistance.
