Australian Seed Potato Industry Certification Authority (AuSPICA)

Dr Nigel Crump is the General Manager and Principal Plant Pathologist of the Australian Seed Potato Industry Certification Authority (AuSPICA), where he leads Australia’s largest seed potato certification system, encompassing production in South Australia, Victoria, and New South Wales. With experience in plant biosecurity, seed certification, and potato pathology, Nigel is responsible for programs that safeguard the integrity, productivity, and international competitiveness of Australia’s potato industry.

In his role, Nigel oversees certification frameworks and plant-health assurance programs that underpin the performance and reliability of Australia’s seed potato supply. His work has focused on strengthening diagnostic capability, improving standards alignment, and ensuring certification systems remain robust, science-based, and fit for purpose in both domestic and export contexts. These efforts have supported the expansion of export markets and enhanced confidence in Australian seed potatoes across the Asia–Pacific region.

Internationally, Nigel serves as a Director of the World Potato Congress and as Chair of the UNECE Specialized Section on Seed Potatoes. He is also a Director of Potatoes Australia Limited. In addition, he is actively engaged in global research and development and policy networks where he works to promote potato seed systems, sustainable production, and international collaboration.

Nigel is widely recognised as a technical authority on seed potato certification systems and biosecurity risk management. He continues to advocate for science-based policy, strong regulatory frameworks, and sector-wide collaboration to support the long-term growth, resilience, and international credibility of the Australian potato industry.
