Dr. Solveig Haukeland

Research Scientist
ICIPE – International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology

Solveig Haukeland is a general nematologist with expertise and several years of experience in entomopathogenic nematodes and mollusc parasitic nematodes as well as key plant parasitic nematodes such as PCN (potato cyst nematodes) and RKN (root knot nematodes) in both tropical and temperate agriculture. She joined icipe in 2014 as a CIM integrated expert, to build the Centre’s expertise and capacity in nematology together with Danny Coyne (IITA). They now jointly lead NemAfrica a regional nematology hub based at icipe in Nairobi. NemAfrica is a team of technicians and students working on various aspects of agricultural nematology where training, awareness and capacity building are key and run parallel to the research activities. Before joining icipe, Solveig worked at NIBIO (Norway) as a nematologist, where she now holds a part-time position in addition to holding a visiting scientist position at icipe. In the fairly recent past, she has been involved in supervising and training postgraduate students on entomopathogenic nematodes in Sokoine University of Agriculture, Tanzania. She is a key nematologist in the region focusing on nematode diagnostics, creating awareness of nematodes and finding solutions to manage them.
