Rwanda Biotech Capacity Building Project, International Potato Center (CIP)

Dr. Eric Magembe is a seasoned plant biotechnologist with extensive experience in the development and deployment of disease-resistant potato and other root and tuber crops across Africa. Since joining the International Potato Center (CIP) in 2012, he has led cutting edge research in genetic transformation, genome editing, molecular diagnostics, and sustainable seed systems, with a focus on potato. Dr. Magembe earned his PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Nairobi through a sandwich program at Texas A&M University, supported by the Borlaug Leadership Enhancement in Agriculture Program (LEAP).
He is currently the Project Lead of the Rwanda Biotech Capacity Building (BioCap) Project, which focuses on strengthening national capacity in genetic transformation, biosafety regulation, stewardship, and the development and deployment of biotech crops. He also serves as the CIP Principal Investigator (PI) for the Rwanda AgriBiotech Program, providing strategic leadership in advancing late blight-resistant potato and broader agricultural biotechnology initiatives in Rwanda.
Dr. Magembe has played a key role in regional and international collaborations, including the Global Biotech Potato Partnership (GBPP), and is actively involved in advancing biosafety, regulatory compliance, and product development. His work contributes to building resilient agricultural systems and enhancing food and nutritional security across the Global South.
